Is the American Express Delta SkyMiles Gold worth its $150 annual fee?

Short answer: the Amex Delta SkyMiles Gold’s $150 fee is covered by two credits alone, Rideshare Credit ($120) and Delta Stays Hotel Credit ($100), if you actually use them, and Delta Stays Hotel Credit voids hotel elite status on the stays it pays for. The catch is cadence: $120 of the $220 advertised arrives in monthly, quarterly or half-year chunks that expire unused.

$220 in advertised credits against a $150 fee. Here is every credit, how it is paid out, where it works, and the fine print that decides whether your spending will reach it.

What it takes to cover the $150 fee

To cover the $150 fee on credits alone you need to reach $150 of the $220 advertised, which is 69% of the headline number. How hard that is depends on when and where each credit pays.

Of the $220: $120 arrives in monthly, quarterly or half-year chunks that do not roll over, so that credit needs matching spend on schedule, every period, or the money is gone; $100 only pays on bookings made through Delta Stays; $120 pays nothing until you enroll or activate it.

What you actually reach depends on your own charges: the audit matches every credit against 12 months of real transactions, counts what actually landed on the card toward the fee, and shows the rest as upside.

What makes the Amex Delta SkyMiles Gold’s credits hard to use

Portal hotel bookings void elite-status recognition. Delta Stays Hotel Credit ($100 a year) pays only on prepaid bookings through Delta Stays, which makes the portal, not the hotel, the merchant of record. Major hotel programs treat these as third-party bookings: elite benefits are not honored at check-in (upgrades, breakfast, late checkout), and the stay earns no points. If you hold hotel status, redeeming this credit typically costs more per stay than the credit returns. If you are actively requalifying for status, every stay routed through the portal to capture this credit is a night that doesn’t count — and a shortfall at year-end can cost an entire tier, worth far more than the credit.Program terms: marriott.com, hilton.com, ihg.com, world.hyatt.com.
  • Monthly credits. Rideshare Credit: $120 a year, but only if the matching charge lands every month. Five orders in a year on a monthly credit pays out for five months.
  • Enrollment required. Rideshare Credit pays nothing until enrolled or activated. The audit checks your statement for the issuer’s own credit postings, so an unenrolled credit shows up as exactly that.

Beyond the credits: status, lounges and points

  • Delta flight perks: a free checked bag worth $35 each way, for you and up to 8 companions, when the ticket is bought with the card. Counted on flights the card can see you take, and worth nothing once you hold Silver Medallion status, which includes them.

Questions about the Amex Delta SkyMiles Gold’s credits

How much are the Amex Delta SkyMiles Gold’s credits worth?

$220 a year at face value across two credits, against a $150 annual fee. Covering the fee on credits alone takes 69% of that. $120 arrives in monthly, quarterly or half-year chunks that expire unused. What you reach depends on your own charges; Worth My Fee scores each credit against 12 months of real transactions.

Which Amex Delta SkyMiles Gold credits expire every month?

Rideshare Credit ($10 a month, $120 a year). Each month’s amount is lost if unused, so the annual figure assumes a matching charge in all twelve months.

Does the Amex Delta SkyMiles Gold’s Delta Stays Hotel Credit honor hotel elite status?

No. It pays only on prepaid bookings through Delta Stays, which makes the portal the merchant of record. Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt and IHG treat that as a third-party stay: no elite benefits at check-in, no points, and no qualifying nights toward status. If you hold hotel status, the credit typically costs more per stay than it returns.

Which Amex Delta SkyMiles Gold credits require enrollment or activation?

Rideshare Credit. It pays nothing until switched on; the issuer’s own statement-credit postings show whether that has happened.

What is the downgrade option for the Amex Delta SkyMiles Gold?

The American Express Delta SkyMiles Blue ($0 a year). Worth My Fee scores it on your same year of charges: if a cheaper card clears its fee the verdict is downgrade, and if none does the verdict is cancel.

What does the Amex Delta SkyMiles Gold earn on spending?

2× on restaurants, 2× on US supermarkets and 2× on Delta purchases, and 1× on everything else. Worth My Fee values Delta SkyMiles at 1.2¢ per point, and counts only the premium over a no-fee 2% cash-back card toward the fee.
