Card credits that expire December 31, 2026.

Calendar-year credits don’t care when you opened the card: whatever is unused on December 31 is gone. Across 39 annual-fee cards that is 133 credits: 52 annual credits with the whole year’s value, 20 July–December halves, 12 fourth-quarter credits and 49 December monthlies. The Amex Platinum Card for Schwab alone has up to $1,687 that resets.

Annual credits: the whole year’s value resets

These pay once per calendar year. If you haven’t used one yet this year, all of it goes on December 31. Airline-fee credits are the classic case: the airline you picked is usually locked until January, so December is the last month to use it on that airline.

Before you spend it

Enroll first. Credits marked “enroll first” pay only on charges made after you enroll in the benefit. Enrolling after the purchase doesn’t reach back.
Leave a few days. The credit is matched to the charge on your statement. A charge still pending on December 31 can land in January, where it counts against next year’s credit.
Portal credits and hotel status. Credits that pay only on bookings through the issuer’s travel portal make the portal the merchant of record, so hotel status and points usually don’t apply. See portal hotel credits.
Buying something only for the credit isn’t free. A credit is worth what you would have spent anyway. Booking a stay you didn’t need to “use” $300 costs you the difference.

What isn’t on this page

37 credits on these cards reset on your card anniversary instead of the calendar, so their deadline is different for every cardholder: free-night awards, anniversary-year travel credits and the like. Trusted-traveler credits run on four-year cycles, and automatic deposits need nothing from you.
