Is the Chase Sapphire Preferred worth its $95 annual fee?

Short answer: the Chase Sapphire Preferred’s $95 fee is covered by one credit alone, DoorDash Monthly Promo (DashPass) ($120), if you actually use it. The catch is where it pays: $100 of the $370 advertised only works through Chase Travel, which voids hotel elite status on those stays.

$370 in advertised credits against a $95 fee. Here is every credit, how it is paid out, where it works, and the fine print that decides whether your spending will reach it.

What it takes to cover the $95 fee

To cover the $95 fee on credits alone you need to reach $95 of the $370 advertised, which is 26% of the headline number. How hard that is depends on when and where each credit pays.

Of the $370: $120 arrives in monthly, quarterly or half-year chunks that do not roll over, so that credit needs matching spend on schedule, every period, or the money is gone; $100 only pays on bookings made through Chase Travel; $240 pays nothing until you enroll or activate it; $240 is delivered off the card, as in-app credit, certificates or complimentary subscriptions, which is worth something only if you would have paid for those anyway; $240 is promotional and has an end date.

$120 of the advertised value comes from terms the issuer states ambiguously; the catalog marks those unverified and the audit scores them conservatively.

What you actually reach depends on your own charges: the audit matches every credit against 12 months of real transactions, counts what actually landed on the card toward the fee, and shows the rest as upside.

What makes the Chase Sapphire Preferred’s credits hard to use

Portal hotel bookings void elite-status recognition. $100 Chase Travel Hotel Credit ($100 a year) pays only on prepaid bookings through Chase Travel, which makes the portal, not the hotel, the merchant of record. Major hotel programs treat these as third-party bookings: elite benefits are not honored at check-in (upgrades, breakfast, late checkout), and the stay earns no points. If you hold hotel status, redeeming this credit typically costs more per stay than the credit returns. If you are actively requalifying for status, every stay routed through the portal to capture this credit is a night that doesn’t count — and a shortfall at year-end can cost an entire tier, worth far more than the credit.Program terms: marriott.com, hilton.com, ihg.com, world.hyatt.com.
  • Monthly credits. DoorDash Monthly Promo (DashPass): $120 a year, but only if the matching charge lands every month. Five orders in a year on a monthly credit pays out for five months.
  • Enrollment required. DoorDash Monthly Promo (DashPass) and Apple TV+ One-Year Subscription pay nothing until enrolled or activated. The audit checks your statement for the issuer’s own credit postings, so an unenrolled credit shows up as exactly that.
  • Subscriptions count only if you would pay. Apple TV+ One-Year Subscription is complimentary memberships, not statement credits. Realized value is zero unless you would otherwise have bought them.
  • Promotional. Apple TV+ One-Year Subscription (ends 2026-12-31) and DoorDash Monthly Promo (DashPass) (ends 2027-12-31). The issuer has not promised these recur; the audit scores them while they run.

Questions about the Chase Sapphire Preferred’s credits

How much are the Chase Sapphire Preferred’s credits worth?

$370 a year at face value across four credits, against a $95 annual fee. Covering the fee on credits alone takes 26% of that. $120 arrives in monthly, quarterly or half-year chunks that expire unused. What you reach depends on your own charges; Worth My Fee scores each credit against 12 months of real transactions.

Which Chase Sapphire Preferred credits expire every month?

DoorDash Monthly Promo (DashPass) ($10 a month, $120 a year). Each month’s amount is lost if unused, so the annual figure assumes a matching charge in all twelve months.

Does the Chase Sapphire Preferred’s $100 Chase Travel Hotel Credit honor hotel elite status?

No. It pays only on prepaid bookings through Chase Travel, which makes the portal the merchant of record. Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt and IHG treat that as a third-party stay: no elite benefits at check-in, no points, and no qualifying nights toward status. If you hold hotel status, the credit typically costs more per stay than it returns.

Which Chase Sapphire Preferred credits require enrollment or activation?

DoorDash Monthly Promo (DashPass) and Apple TV+ One-Year Subscription. They pay nothing until switched on; the issuer’s own statement-credit postings show whether that has happened.

What is the downgrade option for the Chase Sapphire Preferred?

The Chase Freedom Unlimited ($0 a year) and the Chase Freedom Flex ($0 a year). Worth My Fee scores each on your same year of charges: if a cheaper card clears its fee the verdict is downgrade, and if none does the verdict is cancel.

What does the Chase Sapphire Preferred earn on spending?

5× on Chase Travel portal, 3× on dining and 3× on online groceries, and 1× on everything else. Worth My Fee values Chase Ultimate Rewards at 1.5¢ per point, and counts only the premium over a no-fee 2% cash-back card toward the fee.
