Is the Chase United Explorer worth its $150 annual fee?

Short answer: the Chase United Explorer’s $150 fee is covered by two credits alone, Free First Checked Bag ($140) and Instacart Credit ($120), if you actually use them. The catch is where it pays: $150 of the $600 advertised only works through United Hotels and United Cars (cars.united.com), which voids hotel elite status on those stays.

$600 in advertised credits against a $150 fee. Here is every credit, how it is paid out, where it works, and the fine print that decides whether your spending will reach it.

What it takes to cover the $150 fee

To cover the $150 fee on credits alone you need to reach $150 of the $600 advertised, which is 25% of the headline number. How hard that is depends on when and where each credit pays.

Of the $600: $180 arrives in monthly, quarterly or half-year chunks that do not roll over, so those two credits need matching spend on schedule, every period, or the money is gone; $150 only pays on bookings made through United Hotels and United Cars (cars.united.com); $180 pays nothing until you enroll or activate it; $120 is promotional and has an end date.

$140 of the advertised value comes from terms the issuer states ambiguously; the catalog marks those unverified and the audit scores them conservatively.

What you actually reach depends on your own charges: the audit matches every credit against 12 months of real transactions, counts what actually landed on the card toward the fee, and shows the rest as upside.

What makes the Chase United Explorer’s credits hard to use

Portal hotel bookings void elite-status recognition. United Hotels Credit ($100 a year) pays only on prepaid bookings through United Hotels, which makes the portal, not the hotel, the merchant of record. Major hotel programs treat these as third-party bookings: elite benefits are not honored at check-in (upgrades, breakfast, late checkout), and the stay earns no points. If you hold hotel status, redeeming this credit typically costs more per stay than the credit returns. If you are actively requalifying for status, every stay routed through the portal to capture this credit is a night that doesn’t count — and a shortfall at year-end can cost an entire tier, worth far more than the credit.Program terms: marriott.com, hilton.com, ihg.com, world.hyatt.com.
  • Monthly credits. Rideshare Credit and Instacart Credit: $180 a year, but only if the matching charge lands every month. Five orders in a year on a monthly credit pays out for five months.
  • Enrollment required. Rideshare Credit and Instacart Credit pay nothing until enrolled or activated. The audit checks your statement for the issuer’s own credit postings, so an unenrolled credit shows up as exactly that.
  • Promotional. Instacart Credit (ends 2027-12-31). The issuer has not promised these recur; the audit scores them while they run.

Beyond the credits: status, lounges and points

  • United Club one-time passes (2/yr), retail value up to $118 a year. Valued per observed flight day, once across your whole portfolio, credited to the cheapest card that covers it.
  • United flight perks: a free checked bag worth $40 each way, for you and up to 1 companion, when the ticket is bought with the card. Counted on flights the card can see you take, and worth nothing once you hold Premier Silver status, which includes them.

What it earns

Headline rates, with the conservative point value the audit uses. Earning below a no-fee 2% cash-back card is worth nothing extra; only the premium over that counts toward the fee.

Questions about the Chase United Explorer’s credits

How much are the Chase United Explorer’s credits worth?

$600 a year at face value across seven credits, against a $150 annual fee. Covering the fee on credits alone takes 25% of that. $180 arrives in monthly, quarterly or half-year chunks that expire unused. What you reach depends on your own charges; Worth My Fee scores each credit against 12 months of real transactions.

Which Chase United Explorer credits expire every month?

Rideshare Credit ($5 a month, $60 a year) and Instacart Credit ($10 a month, $120 a year). Each month’s amount is lost if unused, so the annual figure assumes a matching charge in all twelve months.

Does the Chase United Explorer’s United Hotels Credit honor hotel elite status?

No. It pays only on prepaid bookings through United Hotels, which makes the portal the merchant of record. Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt and IHG treat that as a third-party stay: no elite benefits at check-in, no points, and no qualifying nights toward status. If you hold hotel status, the credit typically costs more per stay than it returns.

Which Chase United Explorer credits require enrollment or activation?

Rideshare Credit and Instacart Credit. They pay nothing until switched on; the issuer’s own statement-credit postings show whether that has happened.

What is the downgrade option for the Chase United Explorer?

The Chase United Gateway ($0 a year). Worth My Fee scores it on your same year of charges: if a cheaper card clears its fee the verdict is downgrade, and if none does the verdict is cancel.

What does the Chase United Explorer earn on spending?

3× on United purchases, 2× on hotels booked direct and 2× on dining, and 1× on everything else. Worth My Fee values United MileagePlus at 1.2¢ per point, and counts only the premium over a no-fee 2% cash-back card toward the fee.
